Mastercard reason code 4808: what it means and how to respond
Mastercard code 4808 covers missing, invalid, or late authorization. Learn when it applies, what evidence helps, and the response deadlines.
What reason code 4808 means and when it applies
Reason code 4808, “Authorization-related Chargeback,” is filed when the issuer, the institution that issued the card, says the authorization Mastercard required did not exist, was not valid, or no longer protected the transaction. The case is decided by authorization and clearingThis is the stage when the acquirer presents the transaction to Mastercard so the participants can calculate settlement. The record shows when and for what amount the transaction was presented. records, not by a cardholder statement.
Before filing code 4808, the issuer must attempt to honor the transaction and apply any matching refund to the purchase. Once both prerequisites are met, at least one of these five situations is enough:
- Required authorization was not properly obtained. This applies when no valid approval exists, including when the PAN does not exist; a full reversal cancelled the approval; or the cleared amount exceeded the approved amount beyond the applicable tolerance, in which case only the excess may be disputed. The same sub-condition covers an offline chip-approved purchase presented after seven calendar days and a refund presented after five calendar days.
- The account was not in good standing and the protection period had expired. Both conditions must exist at the same time. The issuer must have marked the account as statusedA statused account is one the issuer marked as not in good standing, for example because of a negative available balance or delinquency., and the authorization chargeback protection periodThis is the window measured from approval during which the authorized amount remains protected from this 4808 sub-condition. It controls presentment in clearing, not the deadline to respond to the chargeback. must have expired. The standard periods are 30 calendar days for a preauthorization, seven for an undefined authorization or a final purchase or purchase-with-cash-back authorization, and five for a refund. Final-authorization exceptions are 30 days for Costa Rica domestic transactions and four days for India domestic transactions.
- A card-not-present purchase was approved after the issuer declined it. All of these requirements must be present: the issuer declined the request; the transaction was later approved through Stand-In or X-CodeThese are approval paths Mastercard identifies for a new authorization request. Under this code, they matter when they appear after the issuer’s own decline.; and both requests involved the same merchant, the same PANPAN means Primary Account Number, the main payment account number. Dispute documents may show only its last four digits., and the same expiration date.
- A CAT 3 terminal processed the transaction outside the rules. CAT 3This is a cardholder-activated terminal limited to small amounts, used in settings such as tolls, parking facilities, and car washes. is a cardholder-activated terminal category. At least one failure is enough: the card was expired or not yet valid, magnetic stripe was used, the merchant category was not allowed, the amount exceeded the applicable limit, or the PAN appeared on the applicable stoplist. In Europe, this also includes a card with service code X2X, which required positive online authorization.
- A transit first-ride claim was processed improperly. Under FRR or FRILFRR means First Ride Risk, and FRIL means First Ride Issuer Liability. They are Mastercard frameworks for claims tied to a passenger’s first transit ride., at least one of these failures must exist: the transit transaction was not properly identified; the response was “Not Claimable”; program criteria were not met; the amount exceeded the local limit; or another claim had already been made for the same debt.

If one of these situations is valid, the issuer returns the transaction to the acquirer, the company that connects the merchant to the Mastercard network. The merchant gathers the records, but the acquirer responds to the card scheme. Without a valid authorization and without a defect in the chargeback, proof of delivery, service use, or customer history cannot replace the missing approval.
Codes 4807 and 4812 may still appear as alternatives, but Mastercard says they will be eliminated and recommends 4808. For a claim that the cardholder did not authorize the purchase, see 4837. For a point-of-interaction error, see 4834.

Who files the dispute and what happens next
The issuer files code 4808 in MastercomThis is Mastercard’s system where the issuer and acquirer record the chargeback, response, documents, and any escalation.. The conditions are objective, so the Required Authorization Not Obtained and Stand-In or X-Code sub-conditions do not require a cardholder statement or supporting document.
The acquirer responds with a formal resubmission called a second presentmentThis is the acquirer’s formal response, which presents the transaction to Mastercard again using the ground and data required for the issuer’s sub-condition.. As a general rule, the acquirer has 45 calendar days from the chargeback Settlement Date or Central Site Business DateThese are dates recorded in network messages and used to start the deadline. The applicable field depends on the system that processed the transaction.. The CAT 3 defense that authorization was not required has a 30-day deadline.
Each response uses the code and text for the selected path in DE 72Data Element 72 is the message field where the acquirer enters the date, code, or phrase required to explain the second-presentment ground.. Any document must mask the full PAN so that only the last four digits appear. When the issuer and acquirer do not share a common language, relevant documents require English translations. For Brazil domestic transactions, Mastercard accepts English or Portuguese.
After the second presentment, the issuer may request another review through pre-arbitrationThis is the issuer’s request for the acquirer to reconsider its response before Mastercard decides the case.. This step is optional, and Mastercard recommends proceeding directly to an arbitration case. With or without pre-arbitration, the issuer has 45 calendar days from the second presentment to ask Mastercard to decide the case.

Before building a defense, check whether this dispute is invalidProving any one condition is enough to challenge the dispute's validity.
- A valid approval exists, no full reversal cancelled it, it matches the cleared transaction, and the transaction was presented within the applicable protection period.
- For the expired-protection-period sub-condition, the account was in good standing at the time of the chargeback or the transaction was presented before the period ended.
- The issuer did not attempt to honor the transaction before filing the chargeback.
- The merchant had already issued a refund or credit for the disputed amount.
- The transaction is excluded from the applicable condition, such as a properly identified Emergency Cash Advance or an eligible contactless transit aggregated transaction.
- The chargeback does not meet the selected sub-condition, was filed after the deadline, duplicates another chargeback, or carries a PAN and Acquirer Reference Data combination that differs from the first presentment.

How to reduce the risk of a 4808 chargeback
Keep the approval with the clearing record for the same transaction. The record needs to show the date, response code, approved amount, cleared amount, and any reversal. A full reversal cancels the entire approval. A partial reversal reduces the amount still authorized, and only the unreversed balance remains protected.
Apply the tolerance that matches the transaction. Mastercard identifies a 10% currency-conversion tolerance and a 30% gratuity tolerance for U.S. domestic card-not-present restaurants in MCC 5812 or 5814. For U.S. automated fuel dispensers in MCC 5542, the chargeback is limited to the amount over USD 500 for a commercial card authorized for USD 1, or over USD 175 for any other card.
Present the transaction for clearing before the protection period ends. The standard window is 30 calendar days for a preauthorization, seven for an undefined authorization or a final purchase or purchase-with-cash-back authorization, and five for a refund. Regional exceptions include a seven-day Maestro non-ATM preauthorization when both the card and terminal are in Europe, a 30-day Costa Rica domestic final authorization, and a four-day India domestic final authorization. Also avoid resubmitting through Stand-In or X-Code a card-not-present purchase the issuer just declined.
If the business uses CAT 3, verify all of these requirements before processing without an authorization: the terminal must be identified as CAT 3; the MCCMerchant Category Code identifies the merchant’s line of business. For this CAT 3 path, Mastercard accepts only the categories listed in the rule. must be 4784, 5499 for contactless transactions only, 7523, or 7542; the amount must stay within the applicable CAT 3 limit, which is EUR 50 in Europe; magnetic stripe cannot have been used; and the PAN cannot have appeared on the Local Stoplist or Electronic Warning Bulletin File on the transaction date.

Evidence the merchant and acquirer need to gather
First identify the sub-condition the issuer used. Then choose one matching response path and follow its internal logic. The merchant does not need to collect every kind of evidence on this page.
To show that authorization was properly obtained, all required elements work together: the record that matches the authorization flow, no full reversal, amount reconciliation, and presentment within the protection period. For an online approval, the date and response code go in DE 72. For an offline chip approval, the acquirer uses DE 55Data Element 55 carries the data generated by the chip. It shows the offline approval when that is the ground for the response. or the chip notation required for the region.
To defeat the expired-protection-period sub-condition, at least one complete ground is enough: the transaction was presented within the applicable period and was not reversed; the issuer had not marked the account as not in good standing; or an eligible installment or contactless transit exclusion applies. If one authorization supported multiple clearing records, all of these elements are required: indicator 1403 or 1404 in DE 25, the total of the records within the approved amount, and the matching text in DE 72.
For an approval after an issuer decline, exactly one of three grounds must be established: the decline carried Merchant Advice Code 02This is the code the issuer sends to say it cannot approve at that time and the request may be tried again later.; the issuer itself later approved the transaction; or the cardholder resubmitted the online order. Only the third ground requires supporting documentation. For a refund, both required elements must be present: DE 72 with the credit date and the Acquirer Reference DataThis is reference data created to locate the transaction in the acquirer’s flow. Here, it identifies the credit that already returned the amount to the cardholder., plus a record showing the refund was processed before the second presentment. For an invalid chargeback, use the specific proven defect and matching code: 2713 for unmet requirements or a mismatched reference, 2702 for a missed deadline, or 2701 for a duplicate.

Frequently asked questions
When does Mastercard use chargeback reason code 4808?
The issuer uses 4808 after attempting to honor the transaction and identifying at least one of five authorization sub-conditions: required authorization was not properly obtained; the protection period expired for an account not in good standing; Stand-In or X-Code approved the transaction after an issuer decline; a CAT 3 terminal processed the transaction improperly; or a transit First Ride Risk or First Ride Issuer Liability claim was processed improperly.
Does code 4808 mean cardholder fraud?
No. Code 4808 is decided by authorization and clearing records. It checks whether a valid approval existed, whether the cleared amount stayed within that approval, and whether the transaction reached clearing on time. A claim that the cardholder did not authorize the purchase belongs under code 4837.
When can an account not in good standing support a 4808 chargeback?
Both conditions must exist at the same time: the issuer considered the account not in good standing, and the authorization chargeback protection period had already expired. If the account was in good standing or the transaction was presented within the protection period, this sub-condition does not apply.
What is the deadline to respond to a 4808 chargeback?
As a general rule, the acquirer has 45 calendar days from the chargeback Settlement Date or Central Site Business Date to submit the second presentment. The CAT 3 path in which authorization was not required has a 30-day deadline.
How does the acquirer respond to code 4808?
The acquirer submits a second presentment through Mastercom using a ground that matches the issuer’s sub-condition. It may show, for example, that authorization was valid, the protection period had not expired, the issuer approved the transaction after its own decline, the merchant already issued a refund, or the chargeback itself is invalid.
Can codes 4807 and 4812 still be used?
Yes, but only as alternate codes being phased out. Mastercard recommends 4808. The former Account Number Not on File condition is now part of Required Authorization Not Obtained, and the former warning bulletin condition is now part of CAT 3 Devices.
